The discovery of hidden ritual caches associated with African folk practices suggested African Americans occupied the house. Historic records confirmed Melinda Jackson, a freed slave who purchased the home in 1869, owned the 8.75 acre property - just big enough to grow crops and raise livestock to support her five children.
