Traffic Information
New Traffic Pattern for Redland Road and Georgia Avenue
The ICC wants to alert motorists to two traffic switches, as construction continues for the ICC. The work is part of the Contract A segment of the ICC from I-370 to east of MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and the first of five contracts to be built. Contract A is scheduled to open in late 2010.
Shady Grove Road
Beginning Sunday night, June 22 and continuing weeknights for up to four weeks, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will install twelve 140-foot-long concrete beams over Shady Grove Road south of Tupelo Drive/Epsilon Drive to construct a new bridge as part of the $2.4 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) project.
Redland Road
Northbound and southbound traffic lanes along Redland Road shift onto a new adjacent temporary road. The shift begins approximately 200 feet south of the Nedham Road/Founders Mill Road intersection and continues south for approximately 850 feet. This new alignment will be in place for approximately one year and is necessary to construct the Redland Road Bridge over the ICC.
Georgia Avenue (MD 97)
The lanes of traffic along northbound MD 97 shift into the newly widened median area adjacent to MD 97 starting at Thistlebridge Drive. Motorists return back to the existing northbound MD 97 just south of Bachelors Forrest Road, a distance of less than one-quarter mile. Northbound MD 97 continues to carry three through lanes; no lanes will be blocked, all through lanes and access to side streets will be open. This traffic alignment will be in place for approximately one year and is necessary to allow construction of the MD 97 bridge over the ICC.
Concrete barriers, temporary crash cushions, barrels, temporary traffic signs and variable message boards will alert and guide motorists through the work zone. Variable message boards will update motorists as the actual date of the switch approaches. SHA reminds motorists to “Think Orange” as they drive through the work zone, reduce speeds and be attentive.
